Born in 1599 eldest of five, grew up in political and religious turmoil between Catholics and Protestants. Spent hours by sick mother’s bedside and made pilgrimages to a Marian shrine. Desiring the priesthood from youth, his father encouraged the Franciscans, ending all financial support if he chose the Jesuits. John persisted, entering the Jesuit novitiate and enrolled in the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin. Known for piety, kindness and outgoing personality. Desired to become a military chaplain with martyrdom on the battlefield, however died of fever at 22, with crowds invoking his intercession.
