Born in 1651 to a noble family, the oldest of 10. Received the tonsure at 11 to prepare for his priestly ordination in 1678. Distinguished for his piety and intellect, involved in educational reform of the poor and founded the Institute of Brothers of Christian Schools (Christian Brothers). When education only for the upper class, he brought classroom teaching to all children, while giving away his fortune. Despite trials in his schools and order, remained firmly confident in God, inspiring others to teach and care for deprived and delinquent youth to become good Christians. Died of illness on Good Friday at 68. Patron: teachers, all who work in field of education
