The wife of Chuza, steward of King Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, mentioned in the Gospels as healed by Jesus “cured of evil spirits and infirmities.” She later supported Him and his disciples in their travels, as one who “provided for Him from their substance”. One of the women recorded in the Gospel of Luke as accompanying Jesus and the 12 Apostles and a witness to Jesus’ resurrection; in Luke 24:10 Joanna is mentioned by name, along with Mary Magdalene and Mary of Clopas, as among the women who took spices to Jesus’ tomb and found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. She is known and honored as the Myrrh-bearer, to have carried the myrrh that was to prepare Jesus at death; myrrh was used in sacred oils to anoint kings and priests or an embalming oil upon death in religious ceremonies.
