Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grandfather of Jesus, husband of St. Anne. Though elderly, remained faithful in prayer and miraculously blessed with a child. Tradition teaches that while Joachim was traveling, an angel appeared in a vision, promising a child. Rushing home he found Anne had received a similar vision. In gratitude and devotion, he delivered Mary to the service of the Temple at 3 yrs old. A basket of two doves represents peace and his offering for the gift of their child, he is dressed in green for hope and blue linen for Mary, with a shepherd’s staff for the Christian word. Patron of fathers, grandfathers, married couples, linen traders (his trade).
