A Doctor of the Church born in 347, received education from Aelius Donatus, a famous Roman grammarian, learning Latin and Greek. Traveling to Rome, fell into immorality. Not Christian, his guilt brought him to visit the Roman crypts each Sunday. Companion Bonosus, a Christian, persuaded him to convert. Traveled to Aquileia monastery overseen by Bishop St. Valerian which attracted great minds in Christendom and grew his translation skills. In 374 in Antioch contracted an illness, experienced visions increasing his faith. Lived as desert hermit for four years. Emerged to be pushed into becoming a priest, but without ministry and continuing his monastic life. Studied under St. Gregory of Nazianzus, a renown theologian. Appointed Pope Damascus’ secretary, began his legendary translation of the Bible. Spent his life translating scriptures, died in 420. Once removed a thorn from a lion’s paw who appeared at his door. Patron of archaeologists, translators.
