Also known as Sr. Mary of the Cross, born in 1792 in the French Revolution, secretly taught Catholicism by her mother. Barely learning to read or write, she learned much through hard work. At 25 she felt the call of Divine Love, telling her mother, “God wants me for Himself. He is keeping me for work which is not yet founded.” Setting out to work among the poor and forsaken in a local hospital, she joined the Congregation of the Jesus and Mary. Many years went by before she met Jesus Christ one cold winter night in an elderly, blind woman; Jeanne carried her home to care for her. Focused on the mission of assisting abandoned elderly women, she founded the beginnings of the religious congregation The Little Sisters of the Poor. The work rapidly spread across France with over 100 women by 1850. Replaced as superior, she was sent out to beg for the poor; at her death, this humble servant wasn’t known as the orders’ foundress. Patron of abuse victims, destitute elderly. Feast Day: August 30
