By 1642 in New France working as a layman and missionary with the French Jesuits at Three Rivers until set out from Quebec in 1646 on a Mohawk mission led by St. Isaac Jogues to protect the precarious peace of the time. Volunteered to accompany Jogues despite his description of the hardships and dangers he would face because of the tribal conflicts and the suspicion felt for the missionaries. The Hurons had asked Jogues to lead the mission to help them negotiate a treaty. A few days in, all but one Huron abandoned the group with news the Mohawks were on the warpath. Jean and Fr. Isaac continued to the Mohawk village where Jogues was once held captive. Warriors captured the three as punishment for the recent epidemic and drought.
