Born in 1593 in Normandy, France, joined the Jesuits at 24, ordained a priest in 1622; a teacher at the College of Roeun for 3 years before chosen for missions to New France in 1625. Worked primarily with the Huron for over 15 years (with the exception of 1629-33 in France) under challenging circumstances, learning the language and culture; his gift for Native American languages allowed him to teach missionaries and French traders. His progress in conversions was slow - not until 1635 did 14 Huron agree to be baptized, with 86 converts the following year. By 1640 nearly half the Huron had died from smallpox, and seeing the Jesuits unaffected by the disease, many began to listen to their teachings, appearing men of great power. In 1648 the Iroquois launched a war of extermination against the Hurons. Refusing to flee, he and St. Gabriel Lalemant were captured when Iroquois raided a Huron village; all were ritually tortured and killed. Feast Day: October 19
