Born in Benevento to a rich patrician family; at 15 became a priest of his parish in a relatively pagan area. Bishop of Naples at 20 and befriended St. Juliana of Nicomedia and St. Sossius whom he met during priestly studies. During the Diocletian persecutions, hid his fellow Christians; arrested while visiting St. Sossius in jail. Originally sentenced with colleagues to be thrown to wild bears in the Flavian Ampitheater at Pozzuoli, instead beheaded at nearby Solfatara crater in 305; some legends state beasts wouldn’t eat them and that he was thrown into a furnace but unscathed. For 600 years vials of his blood have liquified up to 18 times each year, a miraculous event intensely studied by scientists: “A dark mass that half fills a hermetically sealed glass container, preserved in a double reliquary in the Naples chapel, liquifies...the phenomenon eludes natural explanation.” Patron of Naples where faithful gather three times a year in Cathedral to witness the liquefaction.
