Born in Dijon, France in 1572, she grew into a woman of beauty and refinement, marrying the Baron de Chantal at 21 and living in a castle with her four children. Widowed at 28, she took a vow of chastity and sought guidance from then bishop of Geneva, St. Frances de Sales, and later St. Vincent de Paul. With the support of her family and Frances, she started the Congregation of the Visitation, an order that accepted women otherwise rejected due to poor health or age. Her reputation for sanctity and sound management drew many aristocratic donations and the expansion of her order.
