James the Greater (for his height) was a son of Zebedee and brother of St. John the Apostle. He was fishing with them when Jesus suggested to recast their nets for a great catch. One of three Apostles at the Transfiguration, he preached in Spain before beheaded by Herod as the first Apostle to die. The scallop shell is collected by pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage walk to his remains in the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain. Patron of pilgrims and Spain.
