Born in Orleans, France in 1607 and ordained a Jesuit priest, he braved the two-month Atlantic trip to Quebec to be a missionary to the Huron Indians. A scholar and an athlete, he and other Blackrobes found trust with the Hurons, but were a mixed blessing bringing new illness but sincere service. Eventually many Hurons were Christian martyrs. Captured by the Huron enemy Mohawks, he lost some fingers before befriending a respected Mohawk woman who preserved his life. Returning to France, the Pope gave Isaac permission to hold the consecrated host. He returned to his Mohawk friend’s home in NY, but was beheaded by tomahawk.
