Castulus and Irene were a Christian married couple living during the persecution of Diocletian. Castulus was a Roman military officer who oversaw the household and palace of Emperor Diocletian. A quiet but zealous Christian, he arranged for Mass inside the palace because it was the last place Roman authorities would search. He also sheltered Christians in his own home, attached to the palace. He even went into the city, gathering men and women to the faith and presenting them for baptism to the pope. Castulus was betrayed, arrested and buried alive in 288. Widowed, Irene remained active in the Christian community. According to legend, she attended to the wounds of St. Sebastian, an army guard and favorite of Diocletian, tied to a tree and shot full of arrows for his defense of the faith.
