Born in 1491 in Spain the youngest of 13, he entered the military at 18, rising to commander until a cannonball struck his legs, forcing partial amputation. During his recovery he read of the Saints and journaled, visualizing himself in the presence of Christ and inspiring his spiritual exercises. Now called as a servant of Christ, he worked in a hospital before returning to school in Paris where he met St. Peter Faber and St. Francis Xavier, his “Friends in the Lord,” and formed the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits.
