Born in Poland in 1185, he was a Missionary Dominican, “the Apostle of Poland” and “of the North” for his Scandinavian travels. A virtuous, great mind whose parents selected teachers to protect his innocence, he received the habit from St. Dominic and his Marian devotion. His famous miracles were during the Tartars’ siege of Kiev: (1) he invented pierogis to feed the famine victims; and (2) he carried the ciborium and heavy statue of the Virgin Mary through Kiev, encouraging people to follow him; reaching the deep river, they walked across the water to safety.
