Born in 656, the son of the Duke of Aquitaine, he married and served in the military, enjoying hunting and worldly pleasures. His spiritual conversion occurred on Good Friday when he went hunting instead of church. As a magnificent stag turned to reveal a crucifix between its antlers, he heard a voice saying: “Hubert, unless you turn to the Lord and lead a holy life, you shall quickly go down to hell” and to seek out the advice of then bishop St. Lambert. Soon after widowed, he relinquished his birthright and military rank, distributed his wealth to the poor and entered priesthood, eventually becoming a bishop.
