A Doctor of the Church, writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, and German Benedictine abbess, she was born in 1098 to nobility. Ill as a child, she was entrusted to a Benedictine nun. Experiencing visions at a young age and a strong devotion to the Holy Spirit, she took vows at 18. Recognized for her immense knowledge of the faith, music and natural science (herbs and medicinal arts), despite no formal education and not knowing how to write, her insights were communicated by God with visions, told to her confessor, and validated by the Pope. More chant compositions are credited to her than any other Medieval composer.
