Born in 329 into a family of saints, he was baptized at 30 after experiencing a conversion while caught in a sea storm, reluctantly ordained at 32, and bishop by 41. During the reign of Emperor Valen, an Arian supporter, St. Basil, his lifelong friend asked him to rebuild the faith in Constantinople where all the churches had become Arian. At a small house chapel dedicated to St. Anastasia, he gave his famous five sermons on the Trinity (The Triadica) enduring great slander and suffering; when he left two years later, the Arian churches had all converted back to the faith. Known as “The Theologian” he presided over the 2nd Ecumenical Council with expositions of dogmatic theology and died in 391.
