Born to a Roman officer and raised in a noble Christian family, he was welcomed into Diocletian’s army as an imperial guard. When Diocletian began persecuting Christians in 303, George refused his orders to sacrifice to the Roman gods, announcing his Christian beliefs. He died tortured on a wheel of swords. Stories of George fighting dragons (Christ’s enemies) began with a story of townsfolk, running out of sheep to offer a beast, soon offered maidens and eventually a princess. To save her, George appeared, protected himself with the sign of the cross, and slayed the dragon. The pagan people converted to Christianity. Patron of England
