Ancient Christian tradition conveys around 303 that pagan Genesius wanted to get Emperor Diocletian’s attention by writing a play mocking Christianity. He studied the faith by pretending to join the Christian community and preparing for Baptism. Soon drawn to Christ, he became conflicted and left to begin writing. He portrayed a sick man desiring Baptism by an actor priest; however, as the water was poured over him, the grace of God fell upon him. Genesius immediately began giving testimony to Jesus and boldly called out Diocletian who was enraged, ordering him to be tortured and beheaded. Patron of actors
