Born in Italy in 1838 11th of 13 children and named Francis (after the Franciscan founder), he lost his mother at 4. He was a dynamic youth with a great passion for his Christian faith and a statue of the Pieta in his house for personal veneration. Educated by Jesuits and twice cured of serious illnesses, he believed God was calling him to religious life but turned down by Jesuits at age 17. Accepted by Passionists taking name Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, as his life was given to prayer, sacrifice and a devotion to Our Lady and the contemplation of her sorrows over the suffering of Jesus. Very tall in stature, sweet and good humored, he was ever popular and cheerful, but strictly followed the Passionist Rule and prepared for future priesthood; however, after only four years in the order, tuberculosis symptoms appeared. He patiently bore his illness, seeking no special treatment and died peacefully at 24. Patron of Catholic Action, clerics, students, young people, Abruzzi, Italy. Feast Day: February 27
