Born in 1610, a Jesuit at 19 and a priest at 27, a scholar, professor and college administrator, delicate in body but strong in desire for the mission of Huronia (inspired by the example of his uncle, a missionary in New France). After many years and requests to be a missionary (denied because of his weak health), arrived in Canada in 1646 and after 7 months was able to speak native language; assistant to St John de Brebeuf for one month among the Huron missions. When he and Brebeuf took off for the village of Saint-Louis, were attacked and captured by Iroquois. The two endured severe torture over several days (fingers removed, eyes gauged, hot coals/wood into their bodies, tearing out their hearts) all over 15 hours before his death at 36. One of the 8 North American Martyrs, also known as the Canadian Martyrs, Jesuits Martyrs of North America or the Martyrs of France who traveled from Renaissance France to the wild North American frontier to win souls for Christ. Feast Day: October 19
