Born around 780 in Friesland the grandson of the Frisian King Radboud, taught from youth at Utrecht by the clergy. Ordained a priest and put in charge of converting the remaining heathens in the northern areas of the diocese. Preached at Walcheren and with St. Odulfus in Stavoren. Known for his piety and erudition, chosen Bishop of Utrecht in 825; immediately began to establish order everywhere, sending zealous priests and virtuous laborers out to dispel paganism. Disliked amongst the barbarous Walcheren inhabitants who were averse to the Gospel, took the most dangerous and difficult missions on himself. Nothing gave him more trouble than marriages contracted within forbidden decrees and the separation of parties. Praised for his knowledge and understanding during the synod of Mainz in 829. Composed a prayer to the Blessed Trinity used for many ages in the Netherlands. Stabbed in 838 by two assassins after celebrating Mass. Patron against deafness.
