Born in 1623 in France to a distinguished family with seven siblings. His mother, an example of piety, encouraged charity to the poor. At age 8 he was tonsured and took minor orders, entering formal education. A member of the Montmorency line, he renounced his rights as heir to pursue his ordination in 1647. Devoted himself to establishing order in parishes and providing relief for the poor and sick, also reforming monasteries. New France (Canada) had no bishop for the first 50 years of its European settlement, relying on Jesuit and Sulpician missionaries. Consecrated a bishop in 1658, he traveled to New France in 1659 and led the Apostolic Vicariate of New France, working for 15 years to establish structure before becoming the first Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Quebec in 1674. With declining health in 1688, he passed on his responsibilities but continued to serve, dying in 1708. Universite Laval and the city of Laval, Quebec, north of Montreal are named after him.
