Born in 1506 in the Kingdom of Navarre to a wealthy family who lived in a castle, he studied in Paris where he met St Peter Favre and St Ignatius Loyola who encouraged him to join the priesthood and together, they formed the Jesuits. As Portugal colonized India, the Pope sent missionaries including Francis, appointed Papal Nuncio to represent the Church. Arriving in 1542, he tried to minister to the Portuguese settlers who were living immorally and embarrassing the Church. Building 40 churches, he tried to convert Japan but returned to India before dying at sea in 1552 on his way to China. Patron of Catholic missions, India.
