Intelligent and gentle, he was born to a noble Swiss family in 1567. God’s call came when he fell off his horse three times, each time his sword and scabbard landed in the shape of a cross. Ordained in 1593, Francis traveled Protestant Switzerland to share the Faith, slipping simple pamphlets under doors, and eventually converting 40,000. In his popular book, Introduction to the Devout Life, Francis taught that holiness and peace are possible for everyone through prayer. Later a bishop, doctor of the church, and advisor of St. Jane de Chantal, he formed the Order of Visitation.
