Known as Mother Cabrini, she was born in 1850 in Italy the youngest of 13. So enthralled by missionary stories and desiring to enter an order but limited with poor health, she founded The Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1880. Desiring to go to China, Pope Leo XIII advised her to instead go to The West. In the US, she helped Italian immigrants in New York with orphanages, schools and hospitals. Requests sent her throughout the US, Europe and Central and South America, making 23 trans-Atlantic crossings and establishing 67 institutions for immigrants before her death in Chicago in 1917.
