Born the son of Alfonso IX, King of Leon and Berengaria, daughter of Alfonso III, King of Castille (Spain). Declared King of Castile at 18, advised and assisted by his mother. Married Princess Beatrice, daughter of Philip of Saubia, King of Germany, and had 7 sons and 3 daughters. His father turned against him, trying to take over his rule, but the two reconciled later and successfully fought off the Moors. With prayer and fasting in preparation for war – and extremely devoted to the Blessed Virgin – he held back Islamic invaders in 1225. In 1234 he conquered the city of Cordoba from the Moors and overtook Seville. A great administrator of the code of laws and a man of deep faith, founded hospitals, monasteries, churches and cathedrals. Rebuilt the Cathedral of Burgos, changed the mosque in Seville into a Cathedral, and founded the University of Salamanca. Married Joan of Ponthieu after the death of Beatrice; died in 1252 after a prolonged illness. Patron of engineers. Feast Day: May 30
