One of the 6 Roman soldiers of Armenian heritage, a Christian convert martyred under Diocletian. Legend tells the Devil took the form of a crow and told him to defer his conversion until the next day; Expeditus stomped on the bird and killed it, declaring, “I’ll be a Christian today!” Expeditus is Latin for light infantry soldiers without marching packs, known for their quick responses. One legend tells of a package delivered to French nuns with saint relics from the catacombs marked “expedite” (to ensure fast delivery); assuming “Expedit” the name of the martyr, they prayed for his intercession with venerated spreading in Europe and strongly in Latin America. Died in 303. Depicted squashing the crow with his right foot and bearing a clock and holding a cross inscribed with “hodie” (Latin for today) and the word “cras” (Latin for tomorrow) coming from the crow’s mouth. As the patron of urgent causes and time, he is called upon to help settle overly long legal cases and against procrastination.
