A Roman military officer, he converted after a vision of a crucifix between a stag’s antlers and a command by God for his family to be baptized that night by the Bishop of Rome. Another vision warns of future trials for his family, losing their possessions and separation for fifteen years. Finally reunited and celebrating in Rome, the intolerant Roman emperor asks Eustace and his family to participate in pagan worship. Refusing, they are thrown to lions but unharmed before being placed in a brazen bull to be roasted to death.
