Born in 290 of one of the most prominent Spanish families. Educated in the Christian religion, distinguishing herself with sincerity to virginity and virtue over worldly distractions. When the Diocletian edict of 304 ordered all to sacrifice to the gods, her mother brought Eulalia to the countryside for protection; however, seeing it as a sign of battle, she escaped returning to Merida to challenge the court. Seized and tempted with torture instruments to renounce her faith, she threw down the idols and spat on the judge. Two executioners tore at her sides with iron hooks, then lighted torches; she spoke only thanksgiving, calling it trophies of Christ. The fire caught her hair, surrounding her head and caused her martyrdom at 14. Legend says a white dove came out of her mouth, flying upward as she passed, terrifying her persecutors who fled, followed by a white snow to cover her body and indicating her sainthood. Patron of runaways, torture victims, Merida and Oviedo, Spain.
