A Doctor of the Church, Syrian deacon and theologian, born in 306 in Nisibis (Turkey/Syria border). The “Harp of the Holy Spirit” he wrote a wide variety of hymns, poems and sermons in verse, sometimes referring to himself as a “herdsman”, his bishop as “shepherd” and his community as a “fold.” The most important of his works are lyric, teaching hymns, defending the Nicene orthodoxy and against heresies which threatened to divide the early church. Writing exclusively in the Syriac language and credited with writing 3 million lines, over 400 of his works still exist including the best-known Prayer of St. Ephrem. Ministering to plague victims, he succumbed to it in 373.
