Born in 908 a noblewoman and relative of Emperor St Henry II, she was raised in Henry’s court by St. Cunegund and married Landgrave William of Friesach, who received vast estates on the Sann River from the Emperor. Their two children were murdered during an uprising of mines owned by William. Grief-stricken, he made a pilgrimage to Rome but died on the way back. Emma then decided to devote her life to God, using her great wealth to give liberally to the poor, founding several religious houses and a Benedictine double monastery, Gurk Abbey, at Gurk, Austria. She founded 10 churches in Carinthia, Austria. Dying in 1080, her relics are in the crypt of Gurk Cathedral. In the past 300 years, the pious and those seeking assistance have traveled to her tomb; this pilgrimage took place every year on the 4th Sunday after Easter until political circumstances ended it in the 20th century.
