Born in 1797 in France, the daughter of a wealthy baron who was the physician to Louis XVIII and Charles X of France, she was baptized in secret given the anti-church age following the French Revolution. She refused to consider marriage, devoting herself to caring for neglected children and the poor. The foundress of The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition, she traveled to Algeria to care for cholera victims and fulfill her dream of missionary work. With her grandfather’s fortune, she bought over 40 large houses, converting them to convents to care for the sick and to educate children in Europe, Africa and Asia.
