Born in France in 590 to a wealthy Gallo-Roman family, became an extremely skilled metalsmith, appointed master of the mint under King Clotaire II of Paris. With wealth from his work, he gave generously to the poor, ransomed slaves, and built several churches, the Solignac monastery and a major convent; he also erected several fine tombs in honor of the relics of St. Martin of Tours and St. Denis. With the King’s consent, sent his servants through towns to take down the bodies of executed criminals and give them proper burial. Ordained a priest in 640, then bishop of Noyon and Tournai. With apostolic zeal he preached in Flanders, working 20 years to convert the area’s pagans with many converts. Legend that when he thought a horse was possessed by demons and reluctant to be shod, he cut off the foreleg and shod the amputated leg before miraculously re-attaching it to the horse. Died in 660.
