Feast Day: October 13

The son of King Ethelred III and his Norman wife, Emma, daughter of Duke Richard I of Normandy, he was born in in 1003 in Islip, England and sent to Normandy with his mother in 1013 when the Danes invaded England. After the death of his father and half-brother, acclaimed king of England in 1042 and married Edith in 1044, but remained childless. As the last Anglo-Saxon English king, his 24-year reign was a peaceful one with good rule; becoming more interested in religious affairs, he was a generous patron of the church, building St. Peter’s Abbey at Westminster, the site of the present Abbey (picture), the first Norman Romanesque church in England and where he is buried. “Confessor” reflects his reputation as a saint who did not suffer martyrdom as opposed to his uncle, King Edward the Martyr. One of England’s national saints until King Edward III adopted St. George in 1350. His feast day is celebrated by the Church of England and the Catholic Church.
