Born in 1540 in London to Catholic parents who became Protestants. Attended St John’s College, Oxford where renown as a lecturer with a student following, the “Campionites.” Gave up promising career at Oxford and an invitation to Queen Elizabeth’s service to become a Catholic priest. In 1571 left for Belgium to found English College to train seminarians for England. In 1573 went to Rome to become a Jesuit and onto Prague for novitiate and receive vows. When a Jesuit mission opened in England, he returned home. Wrote a manifesto of the mission’s religious intent distributed as “Campion’s Brag.” Secretly ministered to abandoned Catholics who greatly desired the sacraments, staying briefly at homes. While conducting this underground ministry in Anglican England, arrested by priest hunters. Arrested and offered to renounce his faith, but refused. Tortured and convicted of high treason; hanged, drawn and quartered at 41. One of the 40 Martyrs of England and Wales.
