Born of a noble family at Glastonbury, England, educated by Irish monks, became a Benedictine monk about 934 and ordained by his uncle, St. Alphege, Bishop of Winchester in 939. Appointed Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, developed it into center of spiritual learning and revitalized nearby monasteries. Appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, he revived monasticism in England. Noted as a musician, composed Kyrie Rex hymns, skilled metal worker and illuminated manuscripts. Referred to in English literature including Dickens, “St. Dunstan…pull’d the devil by the nose with red-hot tongs…” Another story relates him nailing a horseshoe to the Devil’s foot which caused great pain, only agreeing to remove it if the Devil promised never to enter a place where a horseshoe is over the door (the claim of the origin of the lucky horseshoe).
