Born in 1170 to Spanish nobility, his pius mother received visions on pilgrimage of a great son - a dog leaping from her womb with a torch in his mouth that “set the earth on fire” – Dominic (Domini canis, the Lord’s dog). An excellent student, he donated his possessions and entered the Benedictines. He was sent to France to counter the flourishing Albigensian heresies and return the true faith. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him in 1217 with the Marian psalter (The Rosary) to help his preaching efforts, eventually forming the Dominican orders for men and women.
