Born in 1842 in Italy to a poor devout Catholic family with nine siblings. Devout even as a small child attending Church regularly with his mother, he asked to receive his first communion at 7 (normally at age 12) and his priest agreed, so impressed with this faith intelligence and piety; Dominic said it was the happiest day of his life, making four promises to God including “Death rather than sin.” Walking three miles to school daily, he was an exceptional student with his teacher speaking well of him to St. John Bosco. Interested in the priesthood, he asked to go to Fr. Bosco’s Turin oratory; Fr. Bosco took Dominic in, studying directly under him. As his reputation as a fantastic student of the faith grew, his health declined and he was sent home; knowing his death near, Dominic made the Exercise of a Happy death as his final devotion and died at 14; so powerfully touched was Fr. Bosco by Dominic that he wrote his biography, “The Life of Dominic Savio.” Patron of choirboys, juvenile delinquents. Feast Day: May 6
