Born a Frank in 670, he lived as a hermit for 14 years before his ordination as a bishop by Pope Gregory II. En route to Rome, he was sent by the pope to Freising, Germany where he denounced the incestuous marriage of the local duke, Grimoald, to his brother’s widow. The duke persecuted him and the duchess tried to kill him, so he fled until the duke was killed by invaders in 725. He returned on invitation of the successor Huebert. His symbol is a saddled bear; allegedly, a bear killed his pack horse on the way to Rome so Corbinian commanded it to carry the load. The bear is a symbol of Freising and used on the coat of arms of Pope Benedict XVI, also once a bishop of Freising. Patron of Freising, Germany
