Born in 272, the son of junior emperor Constantius I Chlorus and St. Helena. When his father died in 306, declared the junior emperor of York, England; earned a place as a ruler of the Empire by defeating his main rivals at the battle of the Milvian Bridge in 312. Adopted the insignia of Christ, the chi-rho, placed it upon his labarum (the military standard that held the banners his armies carried into battle against pagan enemies) with purple banners inscribed with the Latin “In this sign conquer”. After sharing Empire rule with Licinius, exerts his influence to declare Christianity a free religion. A dominating figure towering over his contemporaries (including Pope Sylvester I), presides over the Council of Nicaea, gave extensive grants of property to the Church, founded the Christian city of Constantinople, and undertook the Christianization of the Roman Empire. While only baptized on his deathbed in 337, called the “Thirteenth Apostle” in the Eastern Church.
