Born in County Donegal in 1532, educated at the Franciscan convent and appointed Bishop of Down and Connor in 1583. In 1588 taken by English authorities on a false charge of treason. Offered a pardon to deny his faith, he refused. As the bishop passed through Dublin’s streets, Catholics emerged to kneel in reverence. Kissing the gallows he said to a priest next to him, “Come, my brave comrade, let us imitate as best we can the death of Him who was led to the slaughter as the sheep before the shearer.” Encouraging the Catholics to constancy, he was thrown off, cut down alive and quartered. Following his execution, the faithful carried off his clothes, gallows’ chips and his body fragments, praying all night by the remains; a paralytic who crawled to the scaffold to venerate his body was instantly cured. One of 17 Irish Catholic Martyrs beatified by Pope John Paul II.
