Born in 1641 to French nobility, he served as a Jesuit preacher in the French and English courts. With remarkable preaching skills, he was made superior of a small Jesuit residence in Burgundy in 1675 and rector of the convent were St. Margaret Mary Alacoque lived. As her confessor, he came to support and promote devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and the visions that St. Margaret received from Jesus, authenticating and writing about her visions to establish this Western Catholic devotion. The emphasis on God’s love for all was antidote to the rigorous moralism of the Jansenists, popular at the time. Later sent to England to serve as confessor to the Duchess of York, he preached by word and his holy life, converting a number of Protestants. Tensions rose against him and Catholics with rumors of a plot against the king; 35 innocent people including eight Jesuits were executed. Claude was unjustly imprisoned, destroying his health. Exiled to France he continued preaching of Christ’s Sacred Heart, dying in 1682.
