Born a nobleman’s daughter in Assisi, Italy in 1194, she was inspired by her contemporary and friend St. Francis to embrace holy poverty. Joined by her widowed mother and sisters, she founded the Poor Clares. During a siege on their convent, she repelled the invaders by holding the Blessed Sacrament at the convent gates.
