Born in 1715 in France, joined Carmel de Compiegne at 21, serving as a nurse and painter. When the French Revolution broke out in 1789, she was 74, used a crutch to walk and presided over 21 nuns as abbess. In 1790, when a decree suppressed French religious orders, the nuns were invited to leave the convent; all affirmed a wish to “live and die in this holy house” but were expelled two years later. A century prior, a Carmelite sister had a vision of all of the nuns of the convent in the glory of Heaven, dressed in white robes, holding hands; therefore, the possibility of their martyrdom had been anticipated and they prayed daily as they consecrated themselves as a possible sacrifice. Removed from their convent, they were lodged in four family homes, continuing to secretly live their vows. When anti-religious laws intensified, the nuns were arrested in 1794 and sentenced to the guillotine. Before their execution they knelt and chanted the "Veni Creator", and renewed aloud baptismal and religious vows.
