In 1879 the White Fathers (Society of Missionaries of Africa) started to evangelize Uganda including Charles, a royal page, who was baptized and became a catechist. When a new anti-Christian king took the throne, Charles was appointed head page and found himself defending the younger boys from the king’s impure intentions. Charles and other Christian pages were arrested and marched bravely to their martyrdom, where they were burned alive in 1886 still cheerfully professing their faith. One of 22 Ugandan martyrs, he protected his fellow pages ages 13-30, encouraging and instructing them in the Catholic faith during their persecutions to remain chaste and faithful.
