Born in Milan in 1538 into the House of Medici, at 12 he dedicated his life to the Church. Called to Rome after his uncle became Pope Pius IV, he was made a cardinal at 23 over the Papal States, Knights of Malta, Franciscans and Carmelites, and soon appointed the Archbishop of Milan, the largest and most corrupt diocese. During the Reformation, he promoted literacy and learning to drive out Church corruption, restore integrity, monastery reform, and end indulgences. When famine and plague struck, he used his money to feed up to 70,000 poor daily. Patron of bishops, catechists, cardinals, seminarians
