Born Youssef Makhlouf in 1828 in Lebanon, one of five children raised in a pious home, drawn to the saints and two hermit uncles. Cared for family’s cows in his youth while praying at a nearby grotto enshrined with a Blessed Virgin Mary icon. Entered monastic life at 23, ordained a Maronite priest in 1859. As a hermit he prayed, attended daily Mass, ate one meal daily (scraps of others), practiced corporal punishment, and slept on the ground with a log for his pillow while observing strict silence. One night, a fellow brother played a joke on him, filling his lamp with water instead of oil; the lamp miraculously burned regardless. A few months after his death in 1898, a bright light was seen from his tomb. His body remained incorrupt even bleeding and flexibly lifelike until 1976. Miracles before and after his death have been witnessed by hordes of pilgrims.
