One of 25 children, Catherine was nicknamed "Euphrosyne" (Joy) due to her cheerfulness. She had visions of Jesus, Mary, guardian angels, and the saints and habits of severe fasting and prayer. Enrolled as a Dominican lay member, living at home but serving the poor with food and clothing, at 21 she experienced a “mystical marriage to Christ.” From 1375 she dictated letters to scribes for religious and civil leaders to renew the church, including the Pope’s return to Rome and a Holy Land crusade. Dying at 33 with little education she is a Doctor of the Church.
